South Cadbury to Melbury Osmond (18 miles and a bit more for missing the b and b)
Surprisingly easy drive to South Cadbury. A house sparrow makes an immediate bid to be bird of the day. Great views of Cadbury Castle and then walking along Corton Ridge. Very pleasant walking down into Sherborne - am able at last to satisfy my craving for a morning coffee - first developed on the walk the previous Saturday. Wasn't so much that I wanted a coffee at this particular time - it was more a matter of the principle that I could have one - last week a cafe failed to appear when requested. Sherborne is a very attractive town and the alms houses are the most striking I've ever seen. Walking up out of Sherborne - going through nettles and brambles - it becomes impossible to get through. Have to veer out and round. Just really glad I didn't wear shorts - it's not good to be seen crying when you're doing a long distance walk. Quite difficult to find the route - using the map and the trusty compass again. Find a rather nice spot to have lunch.
However, a few minutes after I start off again, I notice that I have become walking stick-less. Go back to lunch spot confident that I'll find them but they are not there. This is not the first time that something like this has happened - is there someone silently tracking me and stealing things? - will I look down and find that my trousers have been taken?- it's more risky this long distance walking thing than many people realise. Perhaps a scheme should be adopted like the one in Amsterdam with bikes where you can take them to different places and leave them for other people.
Come across another very overgrown part but "push on through to the other side". (Well, at least it's not a Dylan quote). Cross the A37, notice a pub and head on down to Melbury Osmond. Unfortunately I hadn't checked where the bed and breakfast was. Ask one of the villagers - interrupting his detailed conversation at a doorway with a couple of locals - he's very friendly - shows me on the map - the b. and b. is back on the A37 just near the pub. Brilliant! Head back up the hill.

Bird of the day: blackbird (good effort by the sparrow but the blackbirds were singing most of the day so they deserve it)
