Surfleet to Kate's Bridge (14.5 miles)
This was a really nice walking day - the church at Surfleet has a leaning spire and tower and then it was mainly walking along by the side of a river above the fens. Cold but mainly blue skies. None of the bleakness of yesterday. Just a really nice thing to be doing. As walked past Baston Fen saw an otter moving across the ice. Noticed that in some of the fields the soil is really black - rich with peat. As I get to Kate's Bridge - the edge of the fens the river begins to be at the same level of the land and not above it. At Kate's Bridge I come to a fairly busy road - can't see a bus stop but the driver stops for me anyway. The people here have been really helpful. Back to Peterborough. Walk along the wrong road to the place I'm staying - asking people in the area where the road I wanted was is a whole other story. Arrive on the doorstep - no-one there. Phoned and someone was there in5 mins. Appeared to be the only person staying there - really nice room - by my standards anyway.Things I'm glad I brought - mobile phone so could get in where I was staying
Bird of the day - pochard
Tree of the day - willow
